In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Dr. Shadi Basra engaged with a World Bank delegation. The team included digital specialist Issam Khayyat and senior digital expert George Frederick. They focused on technical and digital support for Yemen’s telecommunications sector and outlined steps to implement the priorities of the Digital Transformation Agenda.

Enhancing Institutional Capacity

During the meeting, Dr. Basra highlighted ongoing efforts to improve institutional, technical, organizational, and regulatory capacities within the telecommunications sector. He emphasized the importance of developing a modern and robust infrastructure, which serves as a foundation for attracting investments, stimulating economic growth, and supporting sustainable development.

Addressing Organizational Needs

Dr. Basra outlined the ministry’s need for technical support in areas such as organizational structure, capacity building, and the development of policies and regulations governing the sector. He discussed plans to update regulations, particularly concerning the establishment of marine gateways, submarine cables, and fiber optic networks. These updates aim to enhance the investment climate and expand opportunities for private sector participation.

Yemen’s Strategic Position

The minister pointed out Yemen’s strategic location as one of the world’s key maritime corridors, positioning it as a potential regional hub for connecting communication flows between the East and West. He expressed gratitude for the World Bank’s support over the past years, noting that advancements in the telecommunications sector would positively impact various vital and service sectors.

In response, the World Bank delegation reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to continue supporting Yemen. They stressed that digital transformation and artificial intelligence have become necessities for enhancing the efficiency of vital sectors, particularly telecommunications and information technology.
