The Yemeni Journalists’ Syndicate has urged the Houthi group to promptly release journalist Saad Shali, the director of the National Resistance Media Center, and to disclose his location. The syndicate expressed deep concern regarding the conditions of journalists who have been forced to flee the city of Al-Mokha due to recent clashes.
The syndicate reported that colleagues of journalist Shali informed them that the Houthis arrested him last Thursday from his home under mysterious circumstances. The group has not revealed his location or allowed any communication with him. The syndicate holds the Houthi group responsible for his safety and for ensuring he does not face any harm or mistreatment.
The syndicate emphasized that the arrest of journalists for their work or opinions constitutes a blatant violation of press freedom and the right to expression. They called on local and international human rights and journalism organizations to condemn these practices and to advocate for the release of all detained journalists.
In addition, the syndicate expressed concern for the situation of journalists displaced from Al-Mokha. They noted that the clashes in the city over the weekend forced dozens of journalists to flee to Aden, where they face dire humanitarian conditions and a lack of basic necessities.
The syndicate called on relevant authorities and human rights organizations to provide urgent assistance to the displaced journalists and to secure their basic needs. They affirmed that protecting journalists represents a national and humanitarian responsibility in the current circumstances.
