The Director General of the International Organization for Migration, Amy Pope, has issued a warning about the rapid spread of misinformation regarding migration. She emphasized that artificial intelligence technologies increasingly amplify these narratives, transforming societal concerns into doubts that target migrants.
During the opening of the International Dialogue on Migration held in Geneva, Pope highlighted that economic uncertainty, conflicts, and climate pressures present significant challenges and tests for governments and communities.
Pope pointed out that false and misleading narratives about migrants, which proliferate through social media and generative artificial intelligence, deepen polarization and increase distrust within societies.
The Director General urged the reliance on trustworthy data and the inclusion of affected individuals’ perspectives at the core of decision-making processes. She advocated for the responsible use of technology to ensure privacy protection and minimize bias.
Pope affirmed that combating misinformation requires enhancing awareness and disseminating facts. This approach will contribute to developing more effective and equitable policies addressing migration issues.
