The Interior Minister praises the achievements of the Masam project in landmine removal efforts.

Interior Minister Lauds Humanitarian Impact of Mine Clearing Project in Yemen

Yemen’s Interior Minister, Major General Ibrahim Ali Haidan, praised the humanitarian efforts of the “Masam” project, which aims to clear landmines in Yemen. Launched by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center in July 2018, the initiative has significantly contributed to protecting nearly half a million Yemenis from the dangers posed by landmines planted by the Iran-aligned Houthi militia in liberated areas.

Visit to the Project Headquarters

During a recent visit to the project’s headquarters in Marib, Minister Haidan, accompanied by the Undersecretary of the Ministry, Major General Mohammed Salem bin Aboud Al-Sharif, received a comprehensive briefing. They listened to presentations from the National Mine Action Program Director, Brigadier General Amin Al-Aqeeli, and Masam Operations Manager Tony Roberts, along with several project staff and experts. They highlighted the project’s objectives and the achievements of the 32 operational teams, which have successfully cleared 463,673 landmines and unexploded ordnance, resulting in the demining of over 60 million square meters.

Understanding the Threat of Landmines

Minister Haidan also examined the various types of landmines and the sophisticated methods employed by the Houthi militia to manufacture them. He emphasized the militia’s intention to maximize civilian casualties through explosions in farms, schools, public facilities, homes, wells, and roads.

A Call for Unity and Support

The Minister contrasted the actions of those who sow death in Yemen with those who seek to preserve life by protecting citizens from these threats. He expressed gratitude for Saudi Arabia’s support for Yemen and its legitimate government, recognizing their commitment to restoring the country’s sovereignty and rebuilding its institutions, especially in the capital, Sana’a. Additionally, he acknowledged the significant humanitarian response to the basic needs of the Yemeni people, which supports development and economic recovery.

The Masam project plays a crucial role in safeguarding lives and fostering stability in Yemen. Through continued efforts and international support, the project aims to further enhance the safety and well-being of the affected communities.
