Minister of Health Honors National Malaria and Vector-Borne Disease Program

In a significant recognition of public health efforts, Dr. Qassem Baheeb, the Minister of Public Health and Population, awarded the National Malaria and Vector-Borne Disease Program with a distinguished excellence shield. This ceremony took place today in the temporary capital of Aden, highlighting the program’s commitment to protecting the population from malaria and other related diseases.

Acknowledgment of Efforts

During the ceremony, which included the presence of Dr. Ali Al-Waleedi, the Undersecretary for Primary Health Care, Minister Baheeb praised the program’s outstanding achievements. He noted the successful implementation of insect surveys across all governorates. These surveys led to the discovery of new disease vectors previously unidentified in Yemen, such as the Anopheles stephensi mosquito, a new malaria vector, and the Aedes albopictus mosquito, a new dengue vector. The program has also published its research findings in international scientific journals, further contributing to global health knowledge.

Motivation for Continued Excellence

Dr. Yasser Baheesh, the Director General of the National Malaria and Vector-Borne Disease Program, expressed gratitude for the recognition. He stated that this honor serves as an additional motivation for all program staff across various sectors and governorates. He emphasized the unwavering support from the Minister of Health, which has been crucial for the program’s activities and ongoing success.

Collaboration with International Experts

In a related acknowledgment, Minister Baheeb also honored Dr. Alia Zaid, a consultant with the U.S. Navy Medical Research Unit (NAMRU). Her contributions to malaria research and surveys have significantly supported the program’s initiatives in this critical area.

This recognition underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in combating malaria and other vector-borne diseases, reinforcing the commitment to public health in Yemen.
