Minister Discusses Health Challenges with Global Fund Officials

Dr. Qasim Bahibeh, Yemen’s Minister of Public Health and Population, met today with Lynn Sossy, Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, and Emanuele Olatungi, Director of Finance. The meeting focused on enhancing collaboration to address Yemen’s escalating health challenges and expanding access to essential health services.

Current Health Crisis in Yemen

During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the World Health Assembly in Geneva, Dr. Bahibeh highlighted the dire health situation in Yemen, exacerbated by ongoing conflict with Houthi militias. He noted that the healthcare system faces an unprecedented crisis characterized by crumbling infrastructure, a severe shortage of medical personnel, and limited operational resources. Additionally, he pointed out the frequent interruptions in funding for health programs from various international organizations.

Urgent Need for Increased Support

The Minister emphasized the critical need for continued and increased support from the Global Fund, particularly in combating malaria and tuberculosis. He called for strengthening the healthcare system’s infrastructure, supply chains, and human resources. Dr. Bahibeh stressed the importance of transitioning from emergency responses to building a more sustainable and comprehensive health system.

Enhancing Coordination with Government Entities

Dr. Bahibeh also highlighted the ministry’s commitment to improving coordination with other government agencies and enhancing collaboration with development partners. He praised the Global Fund’s vital role in financing life-saving health programs in Yemen.

Commitment to Addressing Health Needs

Representatives from the Global Fund expressed their full understanding of Yemen’s unique health challenges. They reaffirmed their commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Health to ensure the continuity of essential health services and maximize health impact amid current challenges.

This collaboration aims to create a more resilient healthcare system in Yemen, ultimately improving health outcomes for its citizens.
