Enhancing Humanitarian Cooperation: Yemen's Intelligence Chief Meets with Red Cross Officials

In a significant meeting held today in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen, Major General Ahmed Al-Yafie, the head of the Intelligence and Reconnaissance Authority, discussed ways to strengthen humanitarian cooperation with Yasmin Braze Dismoz, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Operations Director, and her accompanying delegation. The dialogue focused on enhancing efforts to protect civilians and raise awareness about international humanitarian law.

Support for Humanitarian Efforts

Major General Al-Yafie commended the ICRC for its extensive humanitarian interventions across various sectors. He emphasized the directives from the Ministry of Defense leadership to support the Red Cross’s initiatives and to facilitate its operations in Yemen. This cooperation aims to address the pressing humanitarian needs faced by the population.

Ongoing Violations by Houthi Militias

During the meeting, Al-Yafie raised concerns about the Houthi militia’s persistent violations of local and international laws. He highlighted the group’s continuous attacks on commercial vessels and international shipping, which threaten maritime security. These actions not only disrupt trade but also pose risks to civilian lives.

Red Cross’s Commitment to Yemen

In response, Yasmin Braze Dismoz reaffirmed the ICRC’s commitment to addressing the escalating humanitarian needs in Yemen. Her visit aims to identify areas where the organization can enhance its efforts and provide more effective assistance to those affected by the ongoing conflict.

The discussions between Major General Al-Yafie and the ICRC delegation underscore the urgent need for collaborative efforts to address humanitarian challenges in Yemen. By fostering partnerships and raising awareness of international humanitarian law, both parties aim to protect vulnerable populations and promote stability in the region.
