Yemen and UK Strengthen Historical Ties at Manama Dialogue

On Saturday, Yemen’s Foreign Minister Dr. Shai Al-Zandani met with British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper to discuss the longstanding and robust relationship between Yemen and the United Kingdom. This meeting took place on the sidelines of the 21st Regional Security Forum, known as the “Manama Dialogue.”

Support for Yemen’s Government

During the discussions, Minister Al-Zandani expressed gratitude for the UK’s support of the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government. He highlighted the importance of British humanitarian and developmental aid, which has significantly alleviated the suffering of the Yemeni people amid the ongoing Houthi coup and conflict.

Enhancing Maritime Security

Al-Zandani also praised the UK’s assistance in strengthening the capabilities of Yemen’s Coast Guard and enhancing maritime security. He emphasized the need for continued collaboration in this critical area to ensure safe navigation in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. This cooperation is vital for combating illegal activities that threaten regional and international security.

Economic Reforms and Challenges

The minister addressed the economic and administrative reforms implemented by the Yemeni government. He noted the progress made in stabilizing the currency, increasing revenues, and improving spending efficiency, despite facing significant challenges and extraordinary circumstances.

Ongoing Threats from Houthi Militias

Al-Zandani pointed out the persistent threats posed by Houthi militias to regional peace and security, particularly their attacks on international shipping and commercial vessels.

Continued UK Support for Stability

In response, Foreign Secretary Cooper reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting the Yemeni government. She commended the ongoing reforms and the government’s efforts to achieve political and economic stability, as well as to enhance development and improve living conditions for the Yemeni people.

This meeting underscores the importance of international partnerships in addressing Yemen’s challenges and fostering a stable future for its citizens.
