EU Contributes €3 Million to Support Vulnerable Women and Girls in Yemen

On Monday, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) announced a new humanitarian contribution of €3 million from the European Union (EU). This funding aims to assist approximately 250,000 women and girls in the most vulnerable categories across southern and eastern Yemen.

Urgent Humanitarian and Health Services

The UNFPA clarified that the funding will focus on providing:

• Emergency Relief
• Life-Saving Reproductive Health Services
• Protection and Psychological Support

This initiative comes as around 11 million women and girls in Yemen require some form of humanitarian assistance.

Expanding Service Reach

The new funding will enable the UNFPA to:

• Continue emergency obstetric care in 10 health facilities located in the most needy areas.
• Offer protection, legal assistance, and psychological support in 8 safe spaces for women and girls.
• Provide care for survivors of trauma and mental health services through a specialized center.

Ongoing Partnership and Broad Support

Francesco Galatiere, the UNFPA representative in Yemen, stated that the partnership with the EU has played a crucial role in ensuring that women and girls continue to access health services and protection, even in the most challenging circumstances. Since 2018, EU contributions have exceeded €60 million, enabling the UNFPA to reach over 6 million individuals with life-saving services.

Warning of a Serious Funding Gap

In contrast, the UNFPA has raised concerns about a significant funding gap. Since the beginning of the year, the organization has received only 18% of the total funding required, which amounts to $71.9 million.

The UNFPA emphasized that this funding shortfall threatens to:

• Close health facilities and safe spaces
• Halt rapid response mechanisms in the coming months

The organization calls on partners to sustain and increase humanitarian support to address the escalating needs in Yemen.
