The Equality Organization for Rights and Freedoms has renewed its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of over 100 civilian detainees held by Houthi militias in Dhammar Governorate. Some of these detainees have faced captivity for more than nine years, according to the organization’s open statement.
In its statement, the Equality Organization highlighted that among the detainees are 20 young individuals who have received arbitrary death sentences. The organization reported that these detainees endure torture and live in dire humanitarian and psychological conditions within Houthi prisons. The harsh and unlawful detention circumstances reflect severe violations of human rights.
The organization emphasized that Dhammar Governorate experiences systematic kidnapping campaigns targeting civilians, activists, educators, and social figures. These violations represent a blatant breach of fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed by national laws and international treaties. Such actions indicate a lack of safety and justice in areas controlled by the Houthis.
The Equality Organization urged the United Nations and international organizations to fulfill their humanitarian and legal responsibilities. It stressed the importance of pressuring Houthi militias to release all detainees and those subjected to enforced disappearance. The issue of civilian detainees in Yemen stands out as a critical humanitarian concern that requires serious and immediate international intervention.
The organization underscored the necessity of ending all forms of arbitrary detention and enforced disappearance, as well as halting violations targeting Yemeni civilians. It called for accountability for those responsible for these violations and for justice for the victims and their families. The continuation of such practices threatens the security and stability of the country and reflects the international community’s failure to protect human rights.
