Egypt’s Minister of Labor, Hassan Raddad, recently announced a significant increase in the country’s workforce, which now stands at 35.4 million citizens. This marks a rise from approximately 27 million a decade ago, reflecting an impressive growth rate of over 31%. This surge results from national projects, expansion in the private sector, and the opening of new job markets for Egyptian workers abroad.
Minister Raddad emphasized that the advancements in employment stem from a comprehensive vision adopted by the state. This vision recognizes productive work as a crucial tool for overall development. He highlighted ongoing efforts in vocational training, aligning education with market needs, and increasing youth employment both domestically and internationally. Additionally, the integration of individuals with disabilities into the workforce remains a priority.
Over the past few years, the government has created approximately one million job opportunities annually through public and private investments and national projects. This initiative has contributed to a noticeable decline in unemployment rates across the country.
Looking ahead, the government aims to transition from annual results to a sustainable employment system. This system will rely on scientific planning and link job creation to economic growth. The National Employment Strategy 2030, launched during the Labor Day celebrations in 2026 under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi’s directives, exemplifies this approach. The strategy was developed in partnership with the International Labor Organization and various production stakeholders.
The National Employment Strategy outlines a vision for a more efficient and equitable labor market. Key objectives include:
The strategy aims to generate 1.4 million job opportunities annually until 2030, improve employment rates, boost labor in manufacturing industries, and reduce informal employment. This comprehensive plan serves as a national roadmap for transitioning from mere job provision to ensuring sustainable employment and enhancing work quality.
Egypt’s labor market is experiencing a transformative phase, driven by strategic initiatives and a commitment to sustainable growth. As the country continues to expand its workforce, the focus remains on creating quality jobs and fostering an inclusive economy.
