The dispute between OpenAI and mathematicians escalates over concerns for the future of scientific research.

### Dispute Escalates Between OpenAI and Leading Mathematicians

A significant disagreement has emerged between OpenAI and 25 prominent mathematicians, all of whom have received the Fields Medal. These experts signed an open letter warning that artificial intelligence laboratories threaten the intellectual work of mathematicians. This concern arises amid a competitive race among companies to produce proofs for complex mathematical problems without following traditional scientific channels.

### Academic Pressure and Accusations

The conflict intensified after Tristan Buckmaster, a mathematics professor at New York University, accused OpenAI of pressuring him not to acknowledge a contribution from a researcher at Anthropic in solving an important mathematical problem. Additionally, questions arose regarding whether OpenAI benefited from researchers’ work by using Codex to produce a proof that it described as a “major breakthrough.” Following criticism from researchers at the California Institute of Technology (CalTech), OpenAI withdrew its sponsorship of an event at the institute.

### Mathematicians: Achievements Without Understanding Do Not Benefit Humanity

The open letter emphasized that AI-generated proofs often receive hasty announcements without sufficient time for scientific formulation, documentation, or connection to previous work. The mathematicians warned of the risks of plagiarism and the erasure of the intellectual development that underpins mathematics. They asserted that ideas generated by AI will not become a living part of mathematics unless mathematicians actively develop and integrate them into accumulated knowledge.

### Concerns Over Secrecy in Scientific Research

Researchers express concern that their use of tools like Codex may contribute to training OpenAI’s models. This situation could lead companies to exploit these works to reach solutions before the original creators, potentially encouraging scientists to conceal their research instead of sharing it publicly.

### Leiden Declaration… An Early Warning

The letter follows the Leiden Declaration issued last June, which discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on the nature of mathematical proofs. It provided recommendations for researchers, institutions, and policymakers on how to navigate this transformation.

### A Case Beyond Mathematics

Scientists warn that the current situation in mathematics may extend to other scientific and creative fields as artificial intelligence continues to alter traditional working methods. They emphasize that the greatest challenge lies in ensuring that this transformation does not lead to a loss of the human value in scientific research.
