In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Yemen’s Defense Minister, Lieutenant General Taher Al-Aqili, engaged in discussions with the UN envoy military advisor General Anthony Hayward and his accompanying delegation. The talks primarily focused on the current military and security situation in Yemen, addressing both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
Minister Al-Aqili emphasized the importance of unity among various military components and formations. He highlighted the necessity of consolidating efforts towards a common goal: restoring the state and achieving security and stability across Yemen. The Minister also pointed out the crucial role of the Joint Operations Authority in coordinating military and security initiatives throughout the region.
Despite ongoing assaults and incursions by Houthi militias, Al-Aqili noted a marked improvement in conditions within liberated areas. However, he warned of a dangerous collaboration between the Houthis and terrorist organizations such as Al-Qaeda and ISIS, which poses a significant threat to both regional and international security.
The Defense Minister remarked that the international community is becoming increasingly aware of the dangers posed by the Houthi militia, especially in light of recent developments. He cautioned that the continued existence of this militia could evolve into a ticking time bomb, jeopardizing peace and security in the region.
In response, UN military advisor Anthony Hayward reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to achieving a comprehensive and sustainable peace in Yemen. He stressed the importance of international support for these efforts to stabilize the country.
This meeting underscores the urgent need for collaborative action to address the ongoing challenges in Yemen and highlights the critical role of international cooperation in fostering peace and security.
