The death toll from the earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 920, with many still missing.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Venezuela Following Devastating Earthquakes

The humanitarian crisis in Venezuela worsens as rescue teams and residents continue to search through the rubble of collapsed homes and buildings. This follows two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, which struck the region three days ago.

Rising Death Toll and Missing Persons

The death toll has now reached 920, with the United Nations estimating that over 50,000 individuals remain missing. Reports indicate that this number could rise significantly as search operations continue beneath the debris.

Extensive International Rescue Operations

The United Nations has deployed 25 rescue teams, including 17 international groups, to assist in the search for survivors. Specialized teams from countries such as the United States, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Italy, Mexico, and Switzerland have arrived. Additionally, the first U.S. military units, led by a Marine Corps general, have reached Caracas to aid in the efforts.

Widespread Destruction and Heartbreaking Scenes

Areas affected by the earthquakes, particularly La Guaira north of the capital, have experienced extensive destruction. This includes the collapse of residential buildings and critical infrastructure, such as the Maiquetía International Airport. Footage shows rescue teams working with basic tools amid the rubble, while residents urge authorities to provide heavy machinery to assist in rescuing those trapped.

Protests and Public Outrage

During a visit to one of the collapsed buildings, interim President Delcy Rodríguez faced jeers from locals who accused the government of “politicizing the tragedy.” Jorge Rodríguez, the President of the National Assembly, declared La Guaira a disaster zone under complete military control.

International Aid and Significant Challenges

The United States has pledged $150 million in aid, along with logistical support through ships, planes, and helicopters. However, the United Nations emphasizes that the response remains “extremely complex” due to the scale of destruction and the high number of missing persons.

The situation in Venezuela continues to evolve, with ongoing efforts to provide relief and support to those affected by this catastrophic event.
