Tragic Lightning Strikes Claim 18 Lives in Yemen

Over the past three days, several Yemeni provinces have experienced a series of tragic incidents caused by lightning strikes accompanying heavy rainfall. These events resulted in 18 fatalities and injuries across the provinces of Ibb, Al Hudaydah, Taiz, Al Mahwit, and Amran.

In Ibb, a woman named Rida Al-Mahyoubi died after a lightning strike hit her home in the Al-Maseel area of Far’a Al-Adin district. This incident occurred just two days after a similar tragedy claimed the lives of five family members in the same district.

In Al Mahwit, a child named Murad Ali Muhammad Al-Zandani died two days after being struck by lightning in Bani Majid. Additionally, a young man, Jamal Yahya Hamoud Al-Nasiri, lost his life in the Al-Nasiri area of Al-Tawilah district.

Livestock Losses

The damage extended to livestock as well. A lightning strike caused the death of eight camels in the Shamir area of Mawza district, resulting in significant losses for the owner, Mohammad Hassan Al-Qahzi.

A Recurrent and Dangerous Phenomenon

Local reports indicate that last year, 347 people died due to lightning strikes, alongside significant material losses and the death of hundreds of livestock. This data highlights the seriousness of the phenomenon and its recurring impact on residents and property.

The recent incidents underscore the urgent need for awareness and safety measures to protect communities from the dangers posed by severe weather conditions in Yemen.
