The death toll from the powerful earthquakes that struck Caracas and surrounding areas has reached 1,430, according to Jorge Rodriguez, the President of the Venezuelan National Assembly. As search and rescue operations continue, residents face widespread destruction of infrastructure.
Rodriguez reported that approximately 3,200 individuals sustained injuries, while around 3,100 others have become homeless due to extensive building collapses. These figures highlight the scale of the humanitarian crisis facing the nation, emphasizing the urgent need for support to assist those affected.
The United Nations estimates that over 50,000 people are missing. In response, rescue teams from at least 17 countries have been deployed to aid in the search for survivors trapped under the rubble. This international effort coincides with the government’s declaration of a national emergency, underscoring the critical need to protect lives.
These earthquakes rank among the most powerful tremors Venezuela has experienced in over a century. Authorities have evacuated numerous buildings in the affected regions, and the aftershocks have reached distant areas, including the Brazilian Amazon. Relief efforts continue as teams work to mitigate the impacts of this devastating disaster.
