U.S. Ambassador to Yemen Concludes Tenure with Key Discussions

Meeting Highlights Contributions and Future Cooperation

Today, Sheikh Othman Majali, a member of the Presidential Leadership Council, met with Stephen Fagan, the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, to mark the conclusion of Fagan’s tenure. The meeting focused on the ambassador’s contributions to strengthening U.S.-Yemen relations and supporting the Yemeni government and people.

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

During the discussion, both leaders reviewed the significant efforts made by Ambassador Fagan to enhance cooperation between the two nations. His work has notably supported the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government, alongside the substantial contributions from Saudi Arabia aimed at rebuilding Yemen and fostering economic stability.

Addressing Shared Concerns

The conversation also covered various topics of mutual interest, particularly the U.S. role in supporting Yemen. This includes combating terrorism and addressing extremist groups such as Al-Qaeda, ISIS, and the Houthi militia. Additionally, they discussed efforts to combat smuggling and piracy, as well as reducing Iranian influence in Yemen—areas where Ambassador Fagan has made a notable impact.

Highlighting Humanitarian Efforts

Majali emphasized that Fagan’s proactive engagement in Yemen has significantly aided the Yemeni people. He pointed out the importance of clarifying the realities of Houthi terrorism to the international community, particularly regarding their obstruction of peace efforts. Majali also noted the Iranian-Houthi collaboration that threatens supply chains and maritime security in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Commending Government Initiatives

Both Majali and Ambassador Fagan praised the Yemeni Prime Minister and his government for their efforts to improve local conditions, increase revenue, and address economic challenges. They stressed the importance of enhancing security and stability while rebuilding essential institutions. The leaders agreed that the current phase requires intensified efforts to meet the needs of the Yemeni people.

Ambassador Fagan’s Gratitude

In closing, Ambassador Fagan expressed his gratitude to the Yemeni people and the Presidential Leadership Council for their cooperation during his time as ambassador. He reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to preventing Iranian and Houthi threats to maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb. Fagan pledged continued support for the Yemeni government in its fight against terrorism and in promoting security and stability.

This meeting underscores the ongoing collaboration between the U.S. and Yemen, highlighting the shared commitment to peace and stability in the region.
