Yemen's Military Leadership Reviews Progress of Joint Security and Military Committee

On October 25, 2024, Major General Saqr bin Aziz, Chief of the General Staff and Commander of Joint Operations, visited the headquarters of the Joint Security and Military Committee in Aden, Yemen’s temporary capital. This committee was established under the recent power transfer announcement. During his visit, General bin Aziz received updates from the committee’s chairman, Major General Haitham Qassem Taher, and his deputy, Major General Taher al-Aqali, along with other committee members.

Key Discussions and Achievements

The discussions focused on the committee’s plans and proposals for restructuring and organizing the armed forces and security services. General bin Aziz praised the committee’s diligent efforts to overcome challenges and emphasized the Ministry of Defense’s commitment to fully support the committee’s work, ensuring the success of its important missions.

Building a Cohesive National Military

General bin Aziz highlighted that Yemen’s future, security, and stability depend on rebuilding a cohesive and unified national military. He stressed the importance of loyalty to God and the nation, advocating for a scientific approach to military organization. The goal is to restore the armed forces’ credibility, enhance their capabilities, improve personnel conditions, and optimize resource utilization. Additionally, he called for better coordination and organization of troop movements based on a national vision that supports combat operations under legitimate leadership and constitutional institutions.

The Urgency of Unity Against Threats

The Chief of Staff pointed out the existential battle faced by the Yemeni people, urging everyone to unite efforts to achieve common goals, restore state authority, and defeat the Iranian-backed Houthi militia and its affiliates. He noted that the national defense institution has suffered significant setbacks due to Houthi rebellion. Therefore, it is essential to build on the progress made in restructuring and preparing the armed forces at all levels.

Enhancing Coordination Among Forces

General bin Aziz underscored the necessity of activating coordination plans among various military and security sectors. He stressed that improved collaboration would enhance combat and training performance, focusing efforts on the primary battle. He affirmed that restoring Yemen and its state can only be achieved by unifying both military and verbal fronts. Furthermore, he stated that achieving peace and security in Yemen and the region hinges on ending the Houthi rebellion and supporting Yemeni forces to enhance their readiness for constitutional duties and contribute effectively to regional and global security, including maritime safety.

This meeting underscores the ongoing commitment of Yemen’s military leadership to address pressing security challenges and work towards a more stable future for the country.
