President Alimi Meets UNICEF Representative to Discuss Humanitarian Efforts

On Thursday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed Peter Hawkins, the UNICEF Resident Representative, at the Maashiq Palace. The meeting also included the attendance of Foreign Minister Dr. Shaea Al-Zandani and Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi.

Focus on UNICEF’s Humanitarian Interventions

During the meeting, President Alimi and Hawkins discussed UNICEF’s humanitarian interventions. They specifically highlighted key sectors such as health, education, child protection, malnutrition prevention, vaccination against deadly diseases, and psychosocial support.

Environmental Initiatives and Local Capacity Building

The conversation also covered UNICEF’s environmental initiatives and projects aimed at enhancing local authorities’ capacity to manage water systems. This includes emergency solutions to address the water crisis in the besieged city of Taiz.

Acknowledging Collaborative Efforts

President Alimi praised the ongoing partnership between the government and United Nations organizations, including UNICEF. He acknowledged their valuable contributions in mitigating the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by Houthi militia attacks on oil facilities and maritime shipping.

Updates on UNICEF Activities

Hawkins provided an overview of UNICEF’s activities and interventions relevant to its international mandate. He detailed the UN’s efforts to alleviate the water crisis in Taiz and discussed the cash transfer project funded by the World Bank. Additionally, he shared positive assessments of state institutions in the temporary capital, Aden, and other liberated provinces, as noted by international organizations operating in the country.

The meeting also included the presence of Major General Saleh Al-Maqaleh, Director of the Office of the President of the Presidential Leadership Council.

This meeting underscores the critical role of UNICEF and other organizations in addressing pressing humanitarian needs in Yemen.
