President Alimi Commends Saudi Arabia and the UK for Hosting Maritime Security Conference

Riyadh, Yemen – President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, praised the active role of Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom in hosting the Maritime Security Conference. The event commenced today in Riyadh, attracting representatives from over 40 countries to discuss ways to support Yemen’s coast guard and enhance security in the Red Sea.

A Commitment to Maritime Security

In a post on the social media platform X, President Alimi stated that the conference marks “the launch of a qualitative partnership that strengthens the security of our waterways.” He emphasized the renewed commitment to combat terrorism, address cross-border threats, and protect the interests and national security of the Yemeni people.

New Initiatives for Maritime Safety

The high-level conference will officially announce the establishment of a Joint General Secretariat for Maritime Navigation Security in Yemen. This new international initiative aims to enhance maritime safety in Yemeni waters while combating smuggling, piracy, and human trafficking.

Additionally, the conference will unveil a comprehensive ten-year international strategy for rehabilitating Yemen’s coast guard forces.

Addressing Ongoing Threats

The timing of this conference is critical, as international shipping routes through the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden face continuous attacks from Houthi militias since November 2023. These assaults primarily target global commercial shipping vessels. Furthermore, the risks of ongoing drug trafficking and the influx of Iranian weapons to these militias remain significant concerns.

The collaboration among regional and international partners is vital for safeguarding maritime corridors and ensuring the safety of navigation in the region.
