On Tuesday, Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Brek chaired a Cabinet meeting in Aden, focusing on the current economic and service conditions in Yemen. The meeting aimed to discuss coordinated plans with the Central Bank of Yemen to combat the decline of the national currency and the deterioration of essential services.
The Cabinet reviewed military, security, and political developments, along with ongoing government measures to tackle the challenges posed by the Houthi coup and the systematic economic warfare waged by the terrorist militias against the Yemeni people and state institutions. The Cabinet addressed several agenda items, making appropriate decisions on each.
In his opening remarks, Prime Minister bin Brek provided a comprehensive overview of the ongoing efforts and consultations with the Presidential Leadership Council and international partners. He emphasized the government’s commitment to addressing urgent priorities that affect citizens’ lives and implementing an economic recovery plan. Despite the complexities of the current situation and the hostile tactics of the Houthi militias, he reaffirmed that the government would confront this economic warfare using all available means and in collaboration with domestic and international partners.
The Prime Minister urged ministries and government institutions to elevate their performance and fulfill their responsibilities in line with the current phase. He called for adopting efficient, flexible, and disciplined work mechanisms that respond to citizens’ aspirations and the challenges at hand.
The Prime Minister stressed the importance of improving coordination and performance integration among various ministries, government entities, and local authorities. This approach aims to optimize resource use, implement measures to alleviate citizens’ living burdens, enhance public resources, diversify income sources, improve institutional performance, and combat corruption at all levels. Additionally, he called for activating oversight and accountability tools to strengthen transparency.
The Cabinet discussed several proposals to follow up on the implementation of international sanctions designating the Houthi group as a terrorist organization. This aligns with directives from the President of the Presidential Leadership Council during a joint meeting with the government. The Cabinet emphasized the need for the international community to support this classification and take practical measures to isolate the Houthi militias as an armed entity outside the law and international legitimacy.
The Cabinet urged the United Nations Security Council and the international community to take a firm stance against Iran’s continued smuggling of advanced weapons to the Houthi militias. Recently, authorities thwarted an attempt to smuggle 750 tons of missile systems, air defense equipment, modern radars, drones, and more, violating international laws and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The Cabinet acknowledged the role of national resistance forces in the western coast in intercepting this shipment and commended military and security agencies for thwarting several arms and drug smuggling operations.
The Cabinet approved several coordinated measures to fulfill Yemen’s commitments based on the outcomes of discussions between the President of the Presidential Leadership Council and Russian officials. This cooperation aims to expand historical ties between the two nations.
The Cabinet agreed to amend Article 39 of Prime Ministerial Decision No. 296 of 2006 regarding the executive regulations of Law No. 2 of 2006 on the regulation and protection of aquatic life. This decision follows a presentation by the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, with a commitment to incorporate feedback on the proposed amendment.
The Cabinet directed the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research to prepare a comprehensive report on scholarship and grant programs. This report will include proposals for discussion to unify channels for external scholarships, ensuring transparency and fairness in opportunity distribution while achieving optimal efficiency in managing this vital area.
The Cabinet listened to updates from the Ministers of Defense, Foreign Affairs, and Interior regarding military, security, and political conditions. Additionally, the Minister of Electricity and Energy provided a report on service status and ongoing efforts to improve it and alleviate citizens’ hardships.
This meeting underscores the government’s proactive approach to addressing Yemen’s pressing economic and security challenges while fostering international cooperation and transparency.
