Urgent Appeal to International and Regional Parliaments
Mohammed Ahmed Al-Yamahi, President of the Arab Parliament, has sent written messages to leaders of international and regional parliaments. In these communications, he urges immediate action to halt Israeli attempts to undermine the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
Significance of UNRWA in Supporting Palestinian Rights
Al-Yamahi emphasized the gravity of these attempts, which aim to eliminate UNRWA’s role and undermine the rights of Palestinian refugees. He highlighted the refugees’ right to return, as established by United Nations resolutions.
The President stated that UNRWA is not just a humanitarian agency providing essential services in education, healthcare, and relief to over 6 million Palestinian refugees. Instead, it serves as a symbol of international commitment to the Palestinian cause and their historical rights. He asserted that Israeli efforts to dismantle UNRWA align with broader attempts to resolve the Palestinian refugee issue and deny their right to return. These actions contradict international laws and UN resolutions.
International Cooperation Needed for UNRWA’s Continuation
Al-Yamahi called for united international efforts to protect UNRWA and ensure its continued operation, in accordance with UN Resolution 194 from 1948. He stressed that UNRWA is crucial for supporting stability and achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the region, asserting that there is no viable alternative to its services.
A Strong Stance Against Violations
The Arab Parliament President urged international and regional parliaments to adopt a firm stance in support of UNRWA. He encouraged these bodies to pressure their governments to compel Israel to cease its violations and adhere to international legitimacy, laws, and conventions. Additionally, he condemned the ongoing aggression and acts of genocide and ethnic cleansing against unarmed civilians, which have persisted for over a year.
Al-Yamahi reiterated that the rights of Palestinian refugees are fundamental and inalienable. He made it clear that no attempts by the occupying forces will succeed in infringing upon these rights.
The Arab Parliament’s call to action highlights the urgent need for global solidarity in defending the rights of Palestinian refugees and ensuring the continuation of vital services provided by UNRWA. This appeal resonates in light of ongoing challenges faced by the Palestinian community and underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing humanitarian crises.
