Arab League Secretary-General Condemns Israel’s Ban on UNRWA

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has strongly condemned Israel’s decision to ban the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This agency provides essential educational and healthcare services to over 5.5 million Palestinian refugees across its five operational areas.

A Threat to Palestinian Futures

In a statement released today, Aboul Gheit described the ban as a significant threat to the future of millions of Palestinians. He emphasized that this decision represents the latest step in Israel’s ongoing efforts to undermine the agency’s role, tarnish its international reputation, and cut off its funding sources.

A Dangerous Precedent

Aboul Gheit highlighted the serious implications of this decision on the international stage. He noted that Israel did not establish UNRWA; rather, the agency was founded by a United Nations resolution in 1949. Therefore, he insisted that the responsibility for maintaining the agency lies with the United Nations General Assembly.

Urgent Call to Action

The Secretary-General urged the member states of the Security Council to take action against this dangerous decision. He warned that humanitarian efforts in Gaza would collapse entirely if UNRWA’s role is diminished or its activities are banned.

This condemnation underscores the critical importance of UNRWA in providing necessary support to Palestinian refugees and maintaining stability in the region.
