“Masam” Project Clears 670 Landmines in Yemen

In the first week of August 2024, the “Masam” landmine clearance project made significant progress in Yemen by removing 670 mines scattered across various regions. The cleared ordnance included 5 anti-personnel mines, 47 anti-tank mines, 570 unexploded ordnances (UXOs), and 21 improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Detailed Clearing Operations

  • Aden Governorate: The “Masam” team successfully extracted 16 anti-tank mines and 175 UXOs.
  • Dhale Governorate: In the Hajar directorate, they removed one anti-personnel mine.
  • Hodeidah Governorate: Cleared one anti-tank mine and 11 UXOs in the Hays directorate, and 5 UXOs in the Al Khawkhah directorate.
  • Lahij Governorate: In the Al Muddaribah directorate, eliminated one anti-tank mine and three UXOs.
  • Marib Governorate: Removed one anti-tank mine in the Raghwan directorate and 35 anti-tank mines along with 300 UXOs in the Harib directorate.
  • Shabwah Governorate: Cleared one anti-personnel mine in the Ain directorate and one UXO in the Asilan directorate.
  • Taiz Governorate: Managed to remove 3 anti-personnel mines and 37 UXOs in the Dhubab directorate, two anti-tank mines and 5 UXOs in the Al Mandaq directorate, and 5 UXOs in the Al Mukha directorate. Additionally, 18 anti-tank mines, 28 UXOs, and 21 IEDs were cleared in the Sabr directorate.

Ongoing Efforts and Impact

Since its inception, the “Masam” project has removed a total of 453,968 mines across Yemen. These mines, indiscriminately planted, pose a significant threat to innocent civilians, including children, women, and the elderly.
