Strengthening Yemen-Japan Relations: A Diplomatic Meeting
Today, Sheikh Sultan Al-Barakani, the Speaker of the Yemeni Parliament, met with Yuninichi Nakashima, Japan’s Ambassador to Yemen. The two discussed collaborative efforts to enhance and develop bilateral relations between their nations. They also explored avenues for developmental cooperation and humanitarian support amid the current challenges.
Welcoming the New Ambassador
During the meeting, Al-Barakani congratulated Nakashima on his appointment as ambassador to Yemen. He expressed his best wishes for Nakashima’s success in his new role. Al-Barakani highlighted the strong historical ties between Yemen and Japan, emphasizing that the agreements and areas of cooperation established over the past decades provide a solid foundation for future partnerships that will benefit both nations.
Addressing Current Challenges
Al-Barakani reviewed the ongoing events in Yemen, outlining the significant economic, humanitarian, and service-related challenges facing the country. He attributed these difficulties to the actions of the Iran-backed Houthi militia, which has perpetrated acts of terrorism against the Yemeni people. He reiterated that the constitutional legitimacy has consistently sought peace through previous negotiations with the Houthis. However, the Houthis’ persistent refusal to honor agreements has hindered progress toward achieving security and stability.

The Speaker praised Japan’s exceptional role and humanitarian stance, particularly during Yemen’s most challenging times. He called for strengthening the partnership between Yemen and Japan to address humanitarian crises and achieve sustainable development across various sectors. Al-Barakani underscored the importance of balancing humanitarian support with human development, acknowledging Japan’s steadfast support for Yemen through its projects and services, as well as its firm position against the Houthi coup.
