South Korea experienced a remarkable 68.7% increase in exports year-on-year during August, driven by an unprecedented rise in electronic chip shipments. According to data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, the total export value reached $98.25 billion. Meanwhile, imports rose by 22.5%, amounting to $63.51 billion, resulting in a significant trade surplus of $34.75 billion.

Historic Boom in Semiconductor Exports

The semiconductor sector recorded an astonishing 209% surge in exports, totaling $46.65 billion. This growth stems from increased global spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure by major tech companies. Notably, semiconductor exports have surpassed the $40 billion mark for the third consecutive month, highlighting the industry’s crucial role in bolstering South Korea’s economic growth.
