The Sucotra Dates Festival has officially launched in Hadibo, the capital of Socotra Governorate. This event aims to promote local production and enhance the status of Socotra dates in both Yemeni and regional markets.
Raed Al-Juraibi, the First Deputy of the Governor, emphasized the festival’s role in connecting the island’s residents with their rich agricultural heritage. He highlighted the significance of the date palm, a symbol of the island’s cultural and agricultural identity. The festival features over 34 varieties of local dates, and Al-Juraibi encouraged farmers to adopt modern irrigation techniques. These methods can improve production quality and ensure the sustainability of date palm cultivation, especially since the island boasts more than one million date palms.
The first day of the festival included a Date Quality Competition. Ali Al-Qaisi secured first place, followed by Jaafar Al-Qaisi in second, and Hawash Al-Mazroui in third. Yahya bin Hamoud and Abdullah Ali took fourth and fifth places, respectively.
The festival continues with the Largest Date Bunch Competition, part of a competitive program that highlights the agricultural wealth of the archipelago. This initiative fosters connections between farmers and date producers, promoting collaboration within the agricultural community.
The Sucotra Dates Festival not only celebrates the island’s agricultural heritage but also serves as a platform for innovation and community engagement. As the event progresses, it aims to strengthen the local economy and elevate the profile of Socotra dates in broader markets.
