Authorities in Chile have reported the death of 16 elderly residents and injuries to 10 others following a fire at a nursing home in the Araucania region, located 640 kilometers south of the capital, Santiago.
Firefighting teams successfully contained the blaze, and debris removal efforts are ongoing. Police have established a security perimeter around the site. The cause of the fire remains unclear, prompting authorities to launch an investigation to determine its source and reason, while also ruling out any criminal suspicion.
Health authorities indicated that the nursing home had faced operational violations in the past, resulting in administrative actions and fines since 2019. Chilean President José Antonio Kast has called for an investigation into the incident and ordered immediate measures to review the conditions of nursing homes across the country.
