The Saudi National Society for Human Rights condemned the ongoing recruitment and exploitation of children by the Houthi militia in combat operations. The organization warned that these practices endanger children’s lives, safety, and future, depriving them of education and a secure life.
In a statement published by the Saudi Press Agency, the society noted that international reports documented widespread cases of child recruitment and use by the militia. Additionally, children are exposed to military-themed content and activities. The society emphasized that these violations represent a serious breach of children’s rights and international rules that protect them from recruitment and exploitation in armed conflicts.
The society stressed that addressing child recruitment should not be limited to condemnation. It requires effective measures to halt these practices, facilitate the release of recruited children, and prevent their re-recruitment, while ensuring accountability for those responsible.
The society urged the United Nations and the Security Council to take decisive steps against the continued recruitment of children and to activate international mechanisms to hold perpetrators of these violations accountable. It affirmed that involving children in conflicts contributes to fueling violence and extremism, prolonging the war, and undermining peace opportunities.
The society highlighted the importance of coupling efforts to stop recruitment with effective programs for rehabilitating affected children and reintegrating them into society. It called for ensuring their return to their families and schools, as well as providing necessary psychological and social support to help them regain their normal lives and future.
The society concluded by asserting that protecting children cannot be postponed. The rightful place for children is among their families, in schools, and within their communities, not on battlefields.
