Yemeni Woman Faces 13-Year Imprisonment by Houthi Militia on Fabricated Charges

In a concerning development reported by SAM Organization for Rights and Liberties, the Houthi militia has sentenced a woman from Tihama to 13 years in prison on fabricated espionage charges.

Unfair Trial and Detention

SAM Organization highlighted that the Appeal Court in Sanaa, under Houthi control, handed down the 13-year prison sentence to Hanan Shawi Hassan Al-Montaser along with her five children on espionage charges. The organization disclosed on its official website that Hanan Al-Montaser was deprived of her legal rights to a fair trial.

Al-Montaser was arrested in early July 2019 from the Beit Bos neighborhood in central Sanaa. She is a displaced person from the Hodeidah governorate, living with her five children, including a disabled child, and was working as a guard at a wedding hall, according to the organization.

Call for International Intervention

SAM has called on international organizations to exert maximum effort to pressure the Houthi group for the immediate release of the detained Hanan and to ensure her full rights are guaranteed. The organization also stressed the importance of intensifying monitoring of the violations committed by the group, aiming to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable.

This case sheds light on the ongoing human rights violations in Yemen, urging global attention and action towards securing justice and protection for those unjustly targeted and detained.
