Restoration Work Resumes at Cairo Castle in Taiz

The General Authority for Antiquities and Museums in Taiz has announced the resumption of restoration and maintenance work on the historic Cairo Castle. This initiative coincides with the castle’s recent inclusion on UNESCO’s preliminary heritage list, highlighting efforts to preserve one of Yemen’s most significant historical landmarks.

Funding and Partnerships

The restoration project receives funding from the American Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) and the U.S. Embassy in Yemen. It operates in partnership with the Spanish organization “Heritage for Peace.” Currently, the project focuses on repairing damage to the castle’s gate, which has suffered due to conflict, climate change, and environmental factors.

Skilled Team Overseeing Restoration

A team of skilled professionals, trained by engineers from the General Authority for Antiquities and Museums, supervises the restoration efforts. The authority emphasizes its commitment to preserving the heritage of Taiz, ensuring that the restoration aligns with best practices in heritage conservation.

Project Duration and Economic Impact

The project will span twenty months and is expected to create both direct and indirect job opportunities for many local families. This aspect enhances the developmental impact of the initiative, contributing to the local economy while preserving cultural heritage.

Previous Delays and Future Outlook

The project commenced earlier this year but faced a temporary halt after a few weeks due to the suspension of funding from the U.S. Embassy. This suspension followed former President Donald Trump’s decision to cut aid from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Despite this setback, the restoration efforts are now back on track, aiming to revitalize this iconic site.
