On Sunday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, met with Suhail Ijaz Khan, the Indian Ambassador to Yemen. This meeting highlighted the strong historical ties between the two nations and addressed current local developments.
During the discussion, both leaders emphasized the need for international support to facilitate economic reforms. President Alimi noted the significant improvement in the national currency, attributing this progress to coordinated efforts between the government and the Central Bank, alongside support from allies.
President Alimi praised the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Yemen and India. He expressed gratitude on behalf of the council and the government for India’s historical support of the Yemeni people and their legitimate government. This support includes humanitarian interventions, such as wheat shipments, medical assistance, and COVID-19 vaccines.
The President also acknowledged India’s scholarship and training programs for Yemenis, facilitated through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the Technical and Economic Cooperation Program. Many Yemeni students and trainees have benefited from these initiatives in recent years.
Despite exceptional circumstances, President Alimi highlighted the robust trade partnership between Yemen and India. He reported that trade volume reached approximately $1 billion over the past year. He expressed hope for greater facilitation in importing Indian wheat at preferential prices and for supporting food security projects, including the development of grain and vegetable production.
President Alimi underscored India’s vital role in ensuring maritime security and global navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. He stressed the importance of supporting the legitimate government to eliminate Houthi threats, which are crucial for regional stability and mutual interests in security and development.
In response, Ambassador Khan reaffirmed India’s commitment to Yemen’s security and stability. He emphasized the importance of working closely with the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to expand bilateral relations and tackle shared challenges.
Ambassador Khan announced plans to relocate the Indian consular services office to the temporary capital, Aden. He also mentioned ongoing discussions about various support programs for the Yemeni government and its people.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to strengthen the partnership between Yemen and India, focusing on economic cooperation, educational initiatives, and regional security. Dr. Yahya Al-Shaibi, Director of the Presidential Office, attended the meeting, underscoring the importance of this diplomatic engagement.
