Report: Violations by Houthi Militias in Prisons Uncovered
Human Rights Seminar Highlights Abuses in Houthi Prisons

A recent human rights seminar held alongside the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva revealed alarming statistics regarding the treatment of detainees in Houthi-controlled prisons. Since 2014, the seminar documented the deaths of 671 prisoners due to torture, execution, and medical neglect. Notably, 98 detainees died shortly after their release, having been injected with toxic substances.
Torture and Enforced Disappearances
According to a report by the Yemeni Organization for Prisoners and Abductees, Houthi militias have committed over 17,600 instances of physical torture in their facilities. Additionally, they have recorded 2,002 cases of enforced disappearance, which include 125 children and 16 women, between September 2015 and December 2021. These figures underscore the severe human rights violations occurring in Yemen.
Eyewitness Testimony from a Torture Survivor
During the seminar, Jamal Al-Maamari, the head of the Erada Organization for Combating Torture and Enforced Disappearance, shared his harrowing experience of torture during his imprisonment. His testimony highlighted the brutal methods used by the Houthis, which resulted in a permanent disability for him. Al-Maamari emphasized that thousands of detainees continue to suffer daily in Houthi prisons, facing extreme forms of torture.
The Impact of Executions on Freedom and Democracy
The seminar also addressed the implications of executions both inside and outside Houthi prisons. Participants discussed how these actions threaten freedom and democracy in Yemen. They noted that such practices foster an environment where dissent is met with severe punishment, reinforcing a culture of fear and compliance among the populace. Furthermore, the seminar drew parallels between the torture methods employed by the Houthis and those used by the Iranian regime.
A Call to Action for the International Community
This seminar aimed to shed light on the ongoing violations and torture faced by detainees in Houthi prisons. It served as a crucial reminder for the international community to take action against these crimes and to support human rights in Yemen. The urgent need for intervention highlights the importance of addressing these abuses to promote justice and accountability in the region.
