Today, a significant humanitarian initiative commenced in Marib Governorate, Yemen. The Qatar Red Crescent Society, in collaboration with the Yemen Red Crescent Society, distributed 767 food baskets to the most vulnerable families in the region.
Saeed Mathna, the Director of the Executive Unit for Managing Displaced Persons Camps in Marib, praised the support from the Qatar Red Crescent Society. He emphasized that this assistance plays a crucial role in alleviating the suffering of beneficiary families and meeting a portion of their food needs. Mathna highlighted the growing food insecurity in the governorate, which affects both displaced individuals and host communities. Factors contributing to this crisis include ongoing displacement, climate changes, and the economic downturn, which exacerbate the humanitarian situation and living conditions.
Mathna pointed out that approximately 80,000 families, including the most impoverished displaced individuals in the governorate, have not received any food aid aside from what the World Food Programme or humanitarian partners provide. The lack of response to their needs continues to leave many families struggling with food shortages. The rising number of households facing food insecurity compounds the issue, particularly as they cannot afford sufficient food amidst soaring prices. The persistent decline of the national currency against foreign currencies further intensifies these challenges.
This initiative reflects a vital step towards addressing the urgent humanitarian needs in Marib, highlighting the importance of continued support from international organizations to combat food insecurity in Yemen.
