Prime Minister: Redesignating Houthi militias as a terrorist organization is a positive step; we aim to keep Yemen a priority for the new U.S. administration.

Yemeni Prime Minister Advocates for U.S. Support Against Houthi Militias

Government’s Commitment to U.S. Relations

During his visit to Washington, Yemeni Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak emphasized the government’s dedication to maintaining a clear vision and strategy. This approach aims to keep the issue of Yemen at the forefront of the new U.S. administration under President Donald Trump.

Designation of Houthi Militias as Terrorists

In a statement to the media, Prime Minister bin Mubarak expressed the appreciation of the Presidential Leadership Council, the government, and the Yemeni people for the potential designation of Houthi militias as a foreign terrorist organization. He described this decision as “a step in the right direction.” He urged that further actions should follow, particularly in terms of direct support for the Yemeni government, political pressure, and expanding cooperation in security and military matters.

Call for Global Recognition of the Yemeni Government

The Prime Minister stated, “The world must recognize that it has a strong and genuine partner in achieving stability in Yemen and the region, which is the legitimate government and all its components.” He called on the new U.S. administration to work more closely with the Yemeni government to address any Houthi threats and tackle the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Impact of Houthi Actions on Yemen’s Crisis

Dr. bin Mubarak pointed out that the lack of pressure on the Houthi militia has prolonged the crisis in Yemen for over a decade, exacerbating the suffering of the Yemeni people. He noted that the classification of the Houthis as a terrorist organization responds to the government’s ongoing calls for the international community to take serious action to protect the Yemeni population from the violence and terrorism perpetrated by these Iran-backed militias.

Expectations for Future Actions

The Prime Minister highlighted that the reclassification of the Houthi group as a foreign terrorist organization by the new U.S. administration is a significant measure. He expressed hope that this would lead to additional steps beyond sanctions to dismantle the structure of these Iran-supported militias. He stressed the importance of protecting citizens from the militia’s oppressive behavior and escalating violations that threaten the interests of Yemen, the region, and the world.

Collaboration with International Partners

The Prime Minister assured that the Yemeni government would collaborate with the U.S. administration and the international community to implement the classification decision. This effort aims to deter the reckless behavior of the Houthi militia, which not only disregards the interests of the Yemeni people but also challenges the stability requirements of the region and the world. He emphasized the commitment to work with humanitarian and relief partners, as well as the national commercial sector, to find alternatives that mitigate the impact of this decision on the livelihoods of citizens in Houthi-controlled areas.
