On Sunday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed Catherine Gramegon, the French Ambassador to Yemen. Their meeting focused on key national and regional developments, emphasizing the strong bilateral relations between Yemen and France.
French Support for Yemen
During their discussions, President Alimi underscored the importance of France’s contributions to vital humanitarian and service sectors in Yemen. He praised France’s unwavering commitment to bolstering the presence of the legitimate Yemeni government and its institutions. Additionally, he acknowledged France’s steadfast support for the Yemeni people and their political leadership.
President Alimi referenced France’s recent briefing at the United Nations Security Council, which identified the Houthi militia as responsible for threats to maritime routes and condemned their human rights violations, including the arbitrary detention of relief workers and humanitarian organizations.
Reforms and Security Challenges
President Alimi spoke about the progress achieved through comprehensive reforms spearheaded by the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government, with generous support from Saudi Arabia. These reforms aim to unify military and security decisions, enhance governance and transparency, improve resource management, strengthen state capacities, and mobilize efforts to restore national institutions.
Furthermore, President Alimi reiterated the dangers posed by the Iranian regime’s support for the Houthi militia, viewing it as part of a broader agenda to destabilize the region. He emphasized the need for the international community to consider this threat when addressing the situation in Yemen.
He also highlighted the necessity of improving coordination with international partners to transition from crisis management to proactive threat elimination. This includes imposing stricter sanctions on networks that finance and arm the Houthi militia. Additionally, he called for support of government initiatives to establish a successful governance model in liberated provinces and to regain control over the entire national territory.
