Over 300 children have been killed in Sudan due to drone strikes, raising urgent concerns about civilian safety.

Over 300 Children Killed in Ongoing Sudan Conflict

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reports that over 300 children have lost their lives in the ongoing conflict in Sudan over the past six months. Drone strikes have emerged as the deadliest weapon in this conflict, significantly worsening the situation for children in the country.

Current Situation in Sudan

Fighting currently intensifies in the regions of Kordofan, Darfur, and Blue Nile. UNICEF’s reports indicate that 60% of the casualties are children, primarily due to drone attacks. The conflict escalates between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, with both sides vying for control of the strategically important city of Al-Obeid in North Kordofan.

Alarming Statistics on the Conflict

Since the conflict began in April 2023, United Nations reports confirm that at least 59,000 people have died. Additionally, the violence has displaced approximately 13 million individuals, pushing large areas of the country to the brink of famine. More than 30 million people urgently require humanitarian assistance, highlighting the critical need for immediate support.

Calls for Child Protection

In light of these developments, Sheldon Yett, UNICEF’s representative in Sudan, urged the warring parties to take measures to protect civilians and infrastructure. He emphasized the necessity of allowing safe and rapid access for humanitarian aid. Yett also stressed the importance of implementing all possible measures to shield children from harm, noting that they suffer from a “cycle of violence, displacement, and deprivation.”
