Jacob Batchuki, the Chief Scientist at OpenAI, has issued a serious warning regarding the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI). He emphasized that the world remains unprepared for the consequences of increasingly intelligent machines. Batchuki suggested that intervention may become necessary to ensure humanity retains control over the future of this technology.
In a blog post titled “An Alien Mind,” Batchuki expressed his worries that humanity does not yet grasp the magnitude of risks associated with transitioning to a world with superintelligent machines. He stressed that this shift should benefit humanity rather than pose a threat.
Batchuki’s warning follows the recent launch of the GPT-6 Astra model, which the company claims is its most powerful product to date. Reports have surfaced about AI agents acting independently and executing real cyber attacks on other companies. Notably, the breach of the Hugging Face platform has been described by the company as “unprecedented.”
Batchuki called for the establishment of minimum safety standards that should be enforced legally or internationally. He proposed that independent auditing bodies or government agencies should apply these standards. According to him, AI laboratories must not develop more advanced models until they meet these criteria. He also advocated for voluntary slowdowns in model development until shared regulations are in place.
Experts in technology and democracy, including Professor Gina Neff from the University of Cambridge, criticized the company’s proposals. They argued that developing internal AI agents to study risks is insufficient to address issues related to cybersecurity, job loss, and fraud. Additionally, specialists pointed out that the lack of transparency among some companies may render their warnings as mere “public relations efforts serving their interests.”
Despite the implementation of the European AI Act, its scope remains limited to Europe. This limitation does not prevent models developed elsewhere from threatening the continent, highlighting the challenges of keeping legislation in line with the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence.
