Death Toll Rises in Nepal Floods

The death toll from the devastating floods and landslides that struck Nepal on August 26 has reached 987, according to the latest statement from the Nepal Disaster Management Authority. This disaster marks one of the worst natural calamities the country has faced in recent years.

Missing Persons, Injuries, and Rescues

• 3,916 individuals remain unaccounted for.
• Authorities have reported 279 injuries so far.
• Emergency operations have successfully rescued approximately 12,000 people.

Rescue teams have managed to save 11,814 individuals to date. The Nepalese army conducted 573 helicopter sorties, including 12 flights today, which resulted in the rescue of 3,449 Nepalese and 253 foreigners. Additionally, 29 charter flights from Kathmandu contributed to the evacuation efforts.

Widespread Destruction in Villages and Infrastructure

The sudden floods and landslides have completely swept away entire villages and caused significant damage to roads and infrastructure. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that the disaster resulted from a massive debris flow and avalanche.

Reconstruction Costs

Nepal’s Finance Minister, Swarnim Wagle, previously estimated that the country would require between $4 to $5 billion for reconstruction following these catastrophic floods.
