The Monitoring Organization for Rights and Freedoms has reported that the city of Taiz stands on the brink of a humanitarian disaster. This situation arises from the ongoing blockade imposed by the Houthi militia, which is backed by the Iranian regime. The organization highlighted the severe restrictions on essential supplies and the closure of roads and access points.
In a statement released on the occasion of World Food Day, observed on October 16, the Monitoring Organization indicated that Yemen has reached the fourth phase of a dire humanitarian situation. Currently, Taiz suffers from a suffocating siege affecting over 2.5 million residents, including 140,000 internally displaced persons. The organization urged for pressure to be applied on the militia to open roads and allow the delivery of essential medical supplies and water.
The organization noted that Taiz has entered the fifth and final phase, which is classified as a disaster. Local authorities have issued an urgent call for basic food supplies for citizens. They warned of an impending catastrophe if the situation persists without intervention from relevant international and humanitarian organizations to protect civilians and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid.
The Monitoring Organization emphasized the need for immediate intervention to save the people of Taiz from an imminent disaster. The lack of basic necessities, including fuel and water, continues alongside ongoing indiscriminate shelling of civilians in the city. This violence has intensified in recent days, resulting in numerous casualties, including women and children.
Since 2014, Yemen has faced a worsening food security crisis linked to the ongoing conflict, economic decline, displacement, reduced income sources, rising food prices, and damage to agricultural production. Humanitarian funding has also decreased significantly.
The organization called on the international community, donor agencies, and humanitarian organizations to increase humanitarian funding. They urged the enhancement of food security and nutrition programs, support for livelihoods, and efforts to address the economic and humanitarian causes of the conflict. This approach aims to ensure the right of Yemenis to access sufficient and safe food.
The Monitoring Organization issued a humanitarian appeal to the United Nations and its agencies to fulfill their moral and legal responsibilities. They called for the protection of civilians and the assurance of access to essential food and medical supplies amid the recent escalation by the Houthi militia.
