Today, Dr. Mohammed Al-Ashwal, the Minister of Industry and Trade, chaired a pivotal meeting in Aden, the temporary capital of Yemen. The primary focus of the gathering was the increasing costs associated with transporting shipments that are currently delayed at Aden Port. Participants aimed to identify potential solutions that could help reduce these costs, stabilize local markets, and facilitate smoother trade operations.
The meeting brought together Deputy Minister Salem Al-Wali, ministry officials, representatives from the Aden Chamber of Commerce and Industry, as well as several directors from shipping companies and prominent traders and importers. Attendees shared insights into the key challenges affecting shipping and clearance operations at the port. They also discussed the direct implications of these challenges on the prices of essential food items in local markets.
There has been a notable increase in shipping and clearance costs in recent months, attributed to heightened risk classifications and escalating insurance fees. Participants expressed their concerns regarding how these financial burdens impact citizens’ access to basic necessities, further exacerbating the economic situation.
The meeting underscored the necessity for traders to commit to not increasing food prices without prior notification and justification to the Ministry of Industry and Trade. This proactive approach is aimed at maintaining price stability and safeguarding consumers amid the volatile economic landscape.
Minister Al-Ashwal reiterated the ministry’s dedication to fostering partnerships with the private sector to address imbalances adversely affecting import activities. He noted that the ministry is working closely with relevant authorities to ensure stable supply conditions and regular supply chains, ultimately alleviating the burden on citizens.
The outcomes of this meeting will be critical in shaping the future of trade and market conditions in Yemen, as stakeholders strive to navigate the complexities of transportation costs and economic challenges.
