Strengthening Collaboration in Water and Environmental Sectors

In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Water and Environment Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi engaged with Dina Rafat, a representative from the International Relief Organization. The discussions centered on enhancing cooperation and partnership between the ministry and the organization, specifically targeting the water and environmental sectors.

Technical Support and Project Initiatives

During the meeting, both parties explored the potential for providing technical support to the ministry. In a related discussion, Minister Al-Sharjabi met with Salah Khaled, the regional director of UNESCO for the Gulf States and Yemen. They reviewed the status of the Aden water tanks, which have been significantly affected by urban expansion and informal construction, impacting drainage systems. The meeting emphasized the importance of preserving the historical and environmental character of Aden, recognizing these water tanks as vital historical and cultural heritage sites.

The discussions also touched on a water desalination project funded by the Japanese government. Minister Al-Sharjabi stressed the necessity for additional funding to complete this project, which is crucial for enhancing water security in Aden. He reiterated the importance of strengthening cooperation with various entities to safeguard the Aden water tanks and address the distortions caused by unplanned urban development.
