Yemen Launches Rehabilitation Project for Cyclone-Hit Streets in Al-Ghaydah

In a significant move towards infrastructure recovery, the Minister of Public Works and Roads, Engineer Salem Al-Harizi, together with the Governor of Al Mahrah, Mohammed Ali Yasser, inaugurated the foundation stone for the emergency intervention project aimed at repairing the streets of Al-Ghaydah city, damaged by Cyclone Tej.

Comprehensive Recovery Efforts

The project encompasses the restoration of sections affected by Cyclone “Tej” in Al-Ghaydah’s streets and the completion of the construction and asphalt paving of the 2.25 km dual carriageway of the Thirtieth Street in the Marina tourist city. The Road Maintenance Fund’s main branch in Aden is financing this initiative, with execution by the Public Roads and Bridges Corporation branch in the governorate.

During the foundation stone laying ceremony, attended by the Secretary-General of the Local Council, Salem Neymer, deputy governors, and several officials, Al-Harizi emphasized the Ministry and the Road Maintenance Fund’s commitment to rehabilitate the streets of Al-Ghaydah and the international road, following the damage inflicted by Cyclone “Tej”. He highlighted that these interventions are part of a comprehensive plan aimed at enhancing the infrastructure.

Governor Appreciates Support

Governor Mohammed Ali Yasser expressed his appreciation for the Ministry of Public Works and the Road Maintenance Fund’s support for funding the rehabilitation project for Al-Ghaydah’s streets. He pointed out the necessity of maintaining the international road in the tunnel area and the Haswayn Directorate, severely affected by Cyclone “Tej”, while ensuring that the projects adhere to standards that guarantee their sustainability against natural disasters.

Inspection and Future Plans

The Minister of Public Works and the Governor of Al Mahrah also inspected the extent of the damage to the governorate’s tunnels, which the international road passes through, connecting it to the Hadramout coast and other governorates. Al-Harizi confirmed arrangements with “Hawk” Company, which previously executed the tunnel project, to return to the site for necessary inspections and repairs in the coming days. He stressed the importance of expediting these works to ensure the continuity of transport and relief movements through this vital international artery, crucial for Yemen at large.

This initiative marks a pivotal step towards restoring normalcy and bolstering infrastructure resilience in the face of natural calamities, ensuring the well-being and safety of the Yemeni population.
