Minister of Communications Engages with French Ambassador

Today in Aden, Yemen’s temporary capital, Dr. Shadi Basra, the Minister of Communications and Information Technology, met with Catherine Grameau, the French Ambassador to Yemen. The meeting centered on fostering bilateral cooperation between Yemen and France, with a particular focus on the telecommunications and information technology sectors.

Strengthening Telecommunications Support

During their discussions, Dr. Basra and Ambassador Grameau examined various support mechanisms aimed at advancing Yemen’s telecommunications sector. They underscored the critical need for improving digital infrastructure and enhancing the quality of services available to citizens. The Minister elaborated on ongoing modernization efforts within the sector, which are essential for economic recovery and the enhancement of vital services.

Overview of Current Challenges

Dr. Basra outlined the pressing challenges currently facing Yemen, detailing the government’s initiatives aimed at economic recovery and enhancing institutional performance. He mentioned his recent visits to the United Kingdom and Egypt, where he engaged with officials to discuss training and capacity-building initiatives for technical personnel in telecommunications.

Expanding French Cooperation

The Minister emphasized the necessity of expanding collaborative efforts with France to support the Ministry’s objectives for infrastructure modernization and accelerated digital transformation. He pointed out the significant obstacles confronting the telecommunications sector in the current climate and the urgent need for technical support and effective international partnerships.

French Support for Yemen

In response, Ambassador Grameau commended the government’s reform initiatives aimed at achieving stability. She reaffirmed France’s commitment to assisting Yemen in humanitarian and developmental endeavors, as well as its ongoing efforts to promote peace in the region.

In a separate session, Dr. Basra discussed plans to improve institutional performance with Wael Tarmoom, the Director General of the Public Telecommunications Corporation, alongside other specialists. Their conversation focused on enhancing telecommunications services and expanding infrastructure projects, which include network upgrades and improvements in internet quality.

Minister Basra reiterated the importance of intensifying efforts to implement development plans and enhance service delivery to citizens. He assured that the Ministry would fully support the Corporation’s strategic projects while addressing existing challenges.
