Minister Al-Saqtari discusses enhancing partnership and funding programs in the agricultural and fisheries sectors with FAO.

Minister Discusses Partnership with FAO in Cairo

In Cairo, the Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Salem Al-Saqtri, met today with Dr. Abd Al-Hakim Al-Wa’ar, the Deputy Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The two leaders focused on enhancing and expanding the partnership between the ministry and the FAO. They also aimed to mobilize support and resources to finance priority programs and projects in Yemen’s agriculture and fisheries sectors.

Current Collaboration and Future Projects

During the meeting, both parties reviewed the existing cooperation between the ministry and the FAO. They discussed various ongoing and planned programs and projects for the upcoming phase. Additionally, they identified national priorities and developmental interventions that require increased technical and financial support. The discussions emphasized the need to rally efforts from partners and donors to implement these initiatives.

New Initiatives for Sustainable Development

The two sides also explored joint efforts to prepare studies and designs for new projects. These projects will focus on integrated coastal zone management, agricultural and rural development, natural resource management, and enhancing resilience against climate change impacts. They plan to coordinate with partners and donors to secure the necessary funding for these initiatives.

Focus on Vulnerable Regions

Both parties agreed to prioritize the development of projects and interventions, particularly in eastern provinces and environmentally and agriculturally significant protected areas. These regions boast rich biodiversity and vital natural resources but face increasing vulnerability to climate change effects, including hurricanes, floods, and extreme weather events.

Addressing Water Management and Livestock Development

The meeting also covered several other priority programs and interventions. Key topics included water management and irrigation projects, livestock development, agricultural value chain enhancement, and support for farmers and rural communities. They discussed improving early warning systems and responses to climate-related risks. Furthermore, they explored opportunities to leverage climate financing mechanisms, including the potential to develop fundable proposals for international climate funds and mechanisms.

Strengthening Technical Cooperation

Both the minister and the FAO representative underscored the importance of strengthening technical and institutional cooperation. They emphasized utilizing the FAO’s technical expertise in preparing studies, designing projects, and mobilizing resources. This collaboration aims to transform the ministry’s priorities into a portfolio of fundable and implementable projects.

The meeting signifies a crucial step towards enhancing agricultural and fisheries development in Yemen, addressing both immediate needs and long-term sustainability challenges.
