Yemen Braces for Continued Severe Weather: Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected

Weather Forecast Center Issues Warning

The General Authority of Civil Aviation and Meteorology’s Weather Forecast Center anticipates the continuation of thunderstorms and strong winds across the nation over the next 48 hours. This forecast is based on satellite imagery, numerical model outputs, upper atmospheric layers, and surface observations.

In a weather warning bulletin released on Friday evening, the center detailed expectations of heavy thunderstorms, some accompanied by hail and severe winds, affecting the western coastal plains and highlands from Saada in the north to Taiz, Dhale, and Lahij in the south.

Diverse Weather Patterns Across Regions

The forecast also predicts varying intensity of rainfall, including thunderstorms with strong winds, across parts of the deserts, highlands, plateaus, and coasts of the Mahra, Hadramout, Shabwa, and Abyan governorates. Similar conditions are expected in parts of the Bayda, Al Jawf, Marib, and Aden governorates. Additionally, strong winds capable of lifting sand and dust are forecasted for the Socotra Archipelago and the southern coasts, as well as areas within the range of thunderclouds.

Safety Warnings Issued

The Weather Forecast Center has issued warnings to citizens and drivers, advising against staying in wadis and stream paths, and cautioning against slippery mud roads in areas expected to receive rainfall. The public is also warned to stay away from electrical poles, billboards, trees, and to be cautious of wind-driven sand and dust during thunderstorms and rainfall in areas influenced by thunderclouds. The center emphasizes the importance of turning off mobile phones during thunderstorms.

This weather update highlights the need for preparedness and caution in the coming days as Yemen faces significant weather challenges.
