The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has issued an urgent appeal to donors and the international community, seeking enhanced support to address the escalating humanitarian needs of displaced individuals in Sudan. This call for action comes in the wake of recent floods that have significantly worsened the living conditions in the region.
Since June, Sudan has been grappling with severe rainfall, exacerbating an already dire situation. The IOM warns that the exceptional heavy rains expected in the coming days could affect up to 11 million people. The relentless downpour has not only heightened the humanitarian crisis but also inflicted considerable damage on civil infrastructure, including communication networks, water supplies, and roads, thereby complicating response efforts.
The organization highlighted that ongoing conflicts have further deteriorated the situation, causing significant damage to the country’s infrastructure. This damage hinders the effective delivery of much-needed humanitarian assistance to those affected.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has reported that approximately 50,000 people have been impacted by the collapse of the Arbat Dam in North Red Sea State. The tragic incident resulted in the death of at least 30 individuals and displaced more than 136,000 people across 14 states.
The International Organization for Migration emphasizes the need for a sustainable response to meet the growing humanitarian needs in Sudan. As the country faces this unprecedented crisis, the IOM’s appeal underscores the urgency of international solidarity and support to alleviate the suffering of the displaced population.
This development serves as a stark reminder of the challenges posed by natural disasters, compounded by existing conflicts, and highlights the critical need for increased support and cooperation from the global community to address the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.
