The Operations Room of the “Masam” project, dedicated to demining in Yemen, has reported a substantial increase in the pace of mine clearance activities during April. These initiatives are aimed at securing affected areas and protecting civilians from the dangers posed by landmines.
According to the project’s statement, engineering teams successfully removed a total of 6,827 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices throughout the month. This total comprised 6,402 unexploded munitions, 367 anti-tank mines, 34 anti-personnel mines, and 24 explosive devices. These figures underline the significant risks encountered by field teams during their operations.
In addition, the Masam teams cleared an impressive 1,510,792 square meters of land during April, as part of ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and secure areas for civilian use.
The statement further detailed that in the last week of April, teams removed a total of 1,009 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices. Specifically, they cleared 928 unexploded munitions, 78 anti-tank mines, and 3 anti-personnel mines. Furthermore, during this period, they managed to clear 373,455 square meters of land.
The Operations Room confirmed that since the initiation of the project in the Midi region, teams have removed a cumulative total of 9,246 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices. These efforts are part of a continuous mission to eliminate war remnants and enhance civilian safety in the area.
Osama Al-Qusaibi, the project director, announced that Masam has reached significant milestones since its launch in June 2018, up until May 1, 2023. The teams have successfully cleared a total of 558,016 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and explosive devices. This total includes:
