In a significant development, the Masam Project for mine clearance in Yemen announced on Sunday that its teams have successfully removed 720 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices left behind by Houthi militias across several Yemeni provinces last week.
According to a statement from its media center, the clearance teams extracted a variety of explosives last week, including three anti-personnel mines, 56 anti-tank mines, 647 pieces of unexploded ordnance, and 14 improvised explosive devices. This recent operation has brought the total number of explosive materials cleared in August to 1,390.
The statement further highlighted that between August 1 and 9, the Masam Project’s demining teams cleared over 200,107 square meters of Yemeni territory, marking a significant step towards restoring safety to the region.
Since its inception in June 2018, the Masam Project has made remarkable progress in its mission to rid Yemen of the dangers posed by landmines and unexploded ordnance. To date, the project has successfully removed a total of 454,688 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices, according to the project’s statistics.
The efforts of the Masam Project not only contribute to the safety and security of Yemeni communities but also facilitate the return of normalcy to areas previously plagued by the threat of explosive remnants of war. The project’s ongoing commitment to mine clearance underscores the critical importance of such initiatives in conflict-affected regions.
