Manipulated clips and artificial intelligence: Houthis exploit rumors to disrupt the Taiz front.

Yemeni Minister Warns of Houthi Psychological Warfare Amid Military Escalation

Yemeni Minister of Information, Muammar Al-Eryani, issued a warning on Friday regarding the dangers of the psychological and media warfare being waged by the Houthi militia. This campaign coincides with the militia’s military escalation in Taiz province. The aim is to undermine the morale of fighters, confuse the local population, and create a false impression of collapsing fronts and positions.

Houthi Propaganda Tactics

Al-Eryani explained that Houthi propaganda relies on fake accounts impersonating political and military leaders. These accounts disseminate false statements and circulate old videos as if they document current events. Additionally, the Houthis spread rumors and misleading information through both direct Houthi accounts and impersonated profiles featuring images of national leaders and components.

Creating a Misleading Information Environment

He emphasized that the goal of this strategy extends beyond merely spreading isolated rumors. Instead, it seeks to create a deceptive information environment that makes false news appear credible. This tactic encourages recipients to believe that the multiplicity of sources implies the accuracy of the information.

Importance of Verification

The Yemeni Minister stressed the necessity of verifying any sensitive field information, even if it comes from well-known figures. This is particularly crucial when it involves reports of fallen positions, troop withdrawals, or significant changes in control dynamics.

Psychological Manipulation Techniques

Al-Eryani pointed out that one of the psychological manipulation tools used by the Houthi militia includes producing videos featuring individuals speaking in local dialects. These individuals claim to be members of the armed forces and deliver demoralizing messages, such as ammunition shortages, leadership abandonment, lack of support and air cover, or leaving fighters to their fate.

Use of Manipulated Content

He also warned against videos that have altered audio or commentary, presented as genuine testimonies from various areas in Taiz province. The Houthis utilize editing techniques, digital manipulation, and artificial intelligence tools to create content that is difficult to detect through quick examination.
